This quince tree is truly amazing. It was planted

This quince tree is truly amazing. It was planted in the 1980’s on my families property. This year, despite the scorching temperatures during spring and summer it grew the most fruit we have ever seen it carry.

The birds are coming back to Ngeringa! The results

The birds are coming back to Ngeringa! The results of the 2nd survey of birds found at Ngeringa have just been collated and it’s clear our efforts in revegetating bare paddocks with native plants once found here, and protecting the little remnant vegetation we still have, is proving invaluable. Over a 4 hour early morning survey, 378 birds of 34 bird species were observed, with a notable proportion seen in either the remnant vegetation or revegetation. Most excitingly however, the rarer species such as the Mistletoebird, Rufous Whistler, Striated Pardalote the Yellow and Striated Thornbills, all known to be in decline across the Mount Lofty Ranges, were found in the revegetated areas. As is common across our region, much of our remnant vegetation is dominated by the upper storey eucalypts and whilst invaluable as habitat and food source, the middle storey Acacias, Dodonaea, Leptospermum, Bursaria and the like, is often missing. It is this, which we are rebuilding when we revegetate and we can assume from this survey is of value to these birds. A huge thanks to @joedadam @bior_aus for initiating and conducting our bird surveys. These results give us hope that the efforts of others like us, dedicated or dabbling in landscape regeneration, ARE valuable. #sustainability #birdsofsouthaustralia @birdlifeoz

Living in harmony... our Scottish highland cows and Suffolk x Baby Doll sheep enjoying the sun in the paddock right behind the winery. We love having them so close by.
The Ngeringa livestock plays an integral part for our soil nutrition and health. The sheep graze the vineyard during the winter months to keep the grass low and for helping to cycle nutrients.

After a rainy weekend, I caught the last glimpse o

After a rainy weekend, I caught the last glimpse of sunshine walking though our Iluma vineyard in Nairne last night.
The Iluma vineyard is planted on a west facing slope on the immediate foothills to the north of Mt Barker Summit. At 420m altitude, the soil of the Iluma vineyard sparkles with micaceous schist which brings a distinct minerality to our Single Vineyard Iluma Syrah.

Our @ecovineyards native grass trial has begun...
Just before the rain Erinn tilled patches of our inter-rows in the Summit Vineyard in preparation to seed with four different native grass mixes.
For years we wanted to see native grasses in our vineyard, but being bio-dynamic the battle with introduced weeds was too discouraging.
Thanks to @ecovineyards @retallackviti @winegrapecouncilsa we will give it our best shot and we are looking forward to see the native grasses being habitat for insect diversity.

Tonight we filled cow horns with manure collected

Tonight we filled cow horns with manure collected from our Biodynamic Scottish Highland cows. Once the horns are filled they are buried in our alive soil and rest over the winter months. During this time the manure transforms into one of our most powerful BD Preparations – BD500 more commonly known as Horn Manure. This preparation can then be stored before being stirred in water and sprayed on our soils 2 to 3 times per year across the vineyard and entire farm. #biodynamic #sustainablefarming #bd500 #adelaidehills
