"Here we have captured vibrant fruit, complexity, freshness and texture … pretty much what I look for in a great Chardonnay!"- Erinn Klein, Winemaker
This wine abounds with aromas of rich white peaches atop lightly toasted cashews and subtle spice and sourdough notes – the result of 30% new oak barrels. The nose is layered further with hints of flint and minerals. On the pallet the peach flavours remain, along with spring blossoms, spiced toast and whispers of buttery creaminess. A rich, mouthfilling texture with a fresh acid line.
The fruit for NGERINGA Chardonnay is planted on an easterly facing slope at 380m above sea level on a soil of sandy loam over clay. The top of the vineyard has views over Lake Alexandrina and the mouth of the Murray, which make themselves known on summer evenings with a strong cooling breeze despite daytime temperatures. The vines are planted at a density of 6800 vines/ha.
Whole bunch pressed directly into French oak barriques and puncheons. Natural fermentation with minimal temperature control. 100% natural malolactic fermentation. 30% new barrels. Élevage for 12 months on full lees to build texture and integrated layers of flavour. Minimal sulphur added prior to bottling.
The 2015 growing season was drier and somewhat warmer than 2014 and concluded with an uncommonly early start to the harvest, with grapes for our sparkling base being picked in the first week of February. Ripening across our low-to-moderate yields, however, was spread out enough to allow us to do all of our own handpicking with our French-dominated, in-house crew without recourse to extra hired hands. Wines from this vintage have a quality and character very similar to our stellar 2013 vintage with excellent concentration of flavours.
