"Hits all of the notes from our best piece of dirt where our best Syrah thrives."- Erinn Klein, Winemaker
The combination of abundant fresh blueberry and toasty notes from the new-oak barrels creates a deep-dish pie aroma. Caramel and cinnamon add warmth and there is just a hint of complexing French thyme and marjoram. The palate bursts with abundant, fresh, red fruits – particularly rich, ripe mulberries – and blueberry plushness. Well-integrated tannins produce a velvety mouthfeel.
Planted on a westerly facing slope on the immediate foothills of the Mt Barker Summit at 420m altitude, the soil of the Illuma vineyard sparkles with micaceous schist amidst a shallow sandy loam over clay. A challenging viticultural site with the potential for very distinctive wines.
15% whole-bunch; 100% from our prized Iluma Vineyard; three to four weeks on skins; gentle hand and foot pigéage during the active stages of fermentation; pressed directly into 40% new-oak French barrels for two years.
Wild fermentation, no enzymes, oxidative handling pre-fermentation, spontaneous malolactic fermentation, gentle extraction, warmer fermentation, minimal temperature control. No fining. Estate bottled. Small amounts of sulphites added before bottling.
The 2015 growing season was drier and somewhat warmer than 2014 and concluded with an uncommonly early start to the harvest, with grapes for our sparkling base being picked in the first week of February. Ripening across our low-to-moderate yields, however, was spread out enough to allow us to do all of our own handpicking with our French-dominated, in-house crew without recourse to extra hired hands. Wines from this vintage have a quality and character very similar to our stellar 2013 vintage with excellent concentration of flavours.
