J.E Syrah 2009

100% estate grown Syrah. Red fruits, cherry & blood plum, bright and chirpy, and a sprinkle of nutmeg spice aromas. The softness of sweet marjoram and the sense of kicking around in the falling autumn vine leaf litter. Have you ever tried fresh Schwetchen plums or a freshly baked German Schwetchekuchen. Sounds quaint but they are fabulous! Curiously oval in shape, misty purple skin, yellow flesh and vibrant plum flavour - there is something strongly akin to Schwetchen plums in this wine and with a waft of cedar and white pepper, the flavours persist and roll on the palate. Grainy tannins at front, plush and softening to the back. Medium bodied, neatly structured and satisfying!
TASTING NOTES This vintage we finally see what we aim for in our JE Syrah, plush and fresh with enticing complexity and texture. Cloves, black pepper spice with distinct floral aromatics. Fleshy cherries and blackberry fruit, spice and sweet earth. Fine, grainy tannins, mouth filling and moderate in length. Very approachable.
WINEMAKING NOTES Fruit was picked 2 weeks earlier than expected in first 2 weeks of March. Very little whole bunch went in to the ferments given the fast ripening and limited stem lignification. Up to 3 weeks on skins. No new oak. One racking received at 12 months. Bottled after 18 months in barrel.
VINTAGE NOTES The 2009 growing season started dry with little spring rain. Early summer rain tried to make amends however that was easily forgotten as the summer months continued with only a few millimetres of natural rainfall. For Ngeringa luckily we can supplement our requirements with good quality bore water. Statistically, with small vines and a philosophy of low cropping levels, our water consumption is well below the average. Unlike 2008 where the spike of intense heat came right at the beginning of harvest, this year it came mid February when the vines were just preparing themselves for their final ripening phase. Despite heat leading up to harvest the vines kept their health and fruit was harvested in beautiful condition with high natural acidity.
