It was 6 years ago we planted the first vine at Ngeringa and doing so biodynamically many thought us mad! To do otherwise was not a consideration. The beauty of touching the soil and the satisfaction of removing weeds and nurturing young vines by hand is to know that one is alive!
2005 was our first harvest and followed a warm, dry ripening period with the usual pulses of hot days. Seemingly regardless of day time temperatures, Ngeringa receives cool evening breezes as if on cue. Rather than pushing the vines to produce to the maximum in their first year, we significantly bunch-thinned just as the first colour began to show. The vines are stronger for it and the harvest small and flavourful.
It is an intriguing process, watching young vines grow, produce their first crop and then allowing that fruit to express itself in the resulting wine. We both have our ideals set high and have an ultimate expectation of any wine we produce. We also acknowledge wine to be an expression of its origins and so the question for the past 6 years has always been to the vineyard - we are happy with the result!
